As we get older, realizing the importance of our health takes center stage. For one Brooklyn, New York-born, Long Island-raised hip-hop recording artist, Busta Rhymes, it took a shocking incident to help him take action.
In an exclusive interview with Men's Health magazine, Trevor George Smith Jr. revealed what sparked his weight loss journey. It began when he was getting ready to have an intimate moment with an ex-girlfriend. During this moment, Smith experienced a breathing issue that left him panicking and struggling for breath.
"I had a breathing issue after the intimate interaction," Smith said. "I left the bedroom to get myself out of her view because I was panicking. When I came back in the room, she said something to me that really hit me hard. She said, 'Yo, this is not who I fell in love with. When I met you, you weren't like a musclehead, but you were slim, you were cut, you had your shit right. I need you to get back to who I fell in love with.' That was the initial enlightenment."
Smith was further motivated to make a change when his son slapped him on the stomach and he couldn't give him a pound back. Not long after, he passed out in the car and it took security and his son 45 minutes to get him inside the house. In that moment, he knew he needed to make a drastic change to his lifestyle.
"I ran from the surgery as long as I could, but after that weekend, I saw the doctor, and he looked at my throat, and he said I could die in my sleep," Smith said. "That's when I got surgery and started to get back in shape."
And that he did. Over the next several years, Busta Rhymes lost 100 pounds and is in much better shape today.
