Tragedy struck the Santa Cilia aerodrome near the northern Spanish city of Jaca yesterday when a 75-year-old British man lost his life in a gliding accident. According to reports, emergency responders received an alert at 4pm that the man was conscious and complaining of neck pain. Members of the air club who knew him well, as he had been visiting the aerodrome for over 20 years, were with him in the moments after the accident.
Unfortunately, despite their efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene after he lost consciousness and went into cardiac arrest. Photos of the accident scene showed the damaged glider in the undergrowth near the runway with its left wing against a fallen tree, surrounded by police tape. The man was travelling alone in the single-seat glider.
An investigation into the accident is now underway, and the man has not yet been officially named. However, an unnamed friend has informed a local paper that he was a regular at the aerodrome since 1999 and a member of another flying club in the UK where he was a chef. The friend also said that perhaps the man was going a little too fast and high when he attempted to land.
Santa Cilia aerodrome is often visited by hundreds of glider pilots from all over Europe, as it is one of the best locations in Spain for gliding. Its position at the foothills of the Pyrenees mountain range gives glider pilots the opportunity to enjoy a pleasure flight over the spectacular mountain range.
Yesterday's accident was the first in the province of Huelva, where Jaca is located. We send our deepest condolences to the friends and family of the deceased.
