Brian Jordan Jr., a star actor from Tyler Perry's Sistas, is taking his talents from the screen to the stage. He is set to direct and choreograph a regional production of The Wiz for Kenny Leon's True Colors Theatre Company in Atlanta.
The Wiz will be a star-studded affair, with Tina Fears, Q Parker, Fenner Eaddy and many more gracing the stage. Previews will begin June 13, culminating in opening night June 16, and a run until July 2.
This will be Brian Jordan Jr.'s directorial debut in a stage production. He trained at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts before getting his breakout role in the BET drama series. When speaking to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the 32-year-old Louisiana native expressed his excitement at bringing The Wiz to Atlanta. “Atlanta is the cultural hub of Black change. I always say that and that’s why I’m so excited to bring this show here because this is the place for it to happen," he said. "In our show, Atlanta is Oz – a Utopian place where all these Black people live and it’s magical.”
This rendition of The Wiz is especially personal to True Colors Theatre Company. The musical had a four-year run, with co-founder Kenny Leon as lead director. This will be the first revival of the classic play in nearly two decades. The modern re-imagining of the 1978 musical seeks to "honor the history and illuminate the power of True Colors' artistic excellence in Black storytelling," according to Leon.
The show will take place at the Southwest Arts Center in Atlanta, with tickets available for purchase now. Kandi Burruss and Todd Tucker have also moved forward with a Broadway revival of The Wiz, making this an exciting time for fans of the classic musical.
