Boehringer Ingelheim India has recently taken a step forward towards combating the growing problem of rabies in the Greater Mumbai area. In association with Pet Practitioners Association of Mumbai (PPAM), a non-profit charitable organization, the company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding to initiate a 'Stop Rabies' campaign.
The campaign is in line with India's National Action Plan for Dog-Mediated Rabies Elimination by 2030. It is a two-pronged approach that involves imparting awareness on rabies as well as providing free vaccinations. To make this possible, Boehringer Ingelheim India has committed to donate 30,000 doses of its anti-rabies vaccine, Rabisin. The camp will be supported by BMC and will last for a period of one month.
Dr. Vinod Gopal, Director and Country Head of Animal Health at Boehringer Ingelheim India, stated that rabies is a disease that can be prevented with vaccinations and that adopting the 'One Health' approach is the key to a healthier future for all. Dr. Dhananjay Bapat, President of PPAM, also expressed his opinion on the initiative and said that it stands as an example of the power of public-private partnerships and will help Mumbai move closer to becoming a rabies-free zone.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 30-60% of reported rabies cases and deaths in India are among children below 15 years of age. Vaccinating dogs is the most cost-efficient way to prevent rabies in people. Taking this into account, Mumbai Airport has also launched a Rabies Vaccination Drive for stray dogs as part of the 'Rabies-Free Mumbai' campaign.
