The status of Black women and girls in the United States is both positive and alarming, according to The Report on the Status of Black Women and Girls published in 2023. Professor Gloria J. Browne Marshall and The Law and Policy Group Inc. collected and examined data from various federal and state government sources, academic journals, research reports, legal cases, census reports, and credible news.
The report found Black women to have the highest rates of political participation and high school graduation, as well as high rates of spirituality. This is a positive outcome, however, the research also revealed alarming figures in regards to the trafficking of Black women and a lower life expectancy of 74.8 years. Black women also had the highest rate of lung cancer, despite smoking less than other women.
This report has sparked the curiosity of Professor Browne Marshall, who is interested in what the rate of Black women leaving the United States looks like. She stated, “There appears to be a rise in those people of color who have given up in this country or just want a new experience in another one.”
Professor Browne Marshall believes the report can improve the quality of life by allowing people to determine if there are lifestyle choices that need to change or be updated. She said, “We are progressing. But we must stay vigilant. Black women do so much for so many. We must also take care of ourselves. This report will help. Knowledge is power.”
Browne Marshall credited Yunior Rivas, assistant director and senior researcher of L&PG, Inc., and associate researcher Lesley Yates, a senior at Spelman College, for their roles in working on the report.
This report shines a light on the status of Black women and girls in the United States, and can be used to empower them and to advocate for change. Through understanding the current state of affairs, we can work together to create a more equitable future.
