Black-owned manga company partners with Black Marvel writer for new light novel series.
At SaturdayCon 2023, Marvel writer Stephanie Williams and Black-owned manga digital comics magazine Saturday AM made a groundbreaking announcement. They will be partnering up to create the magazine's first-ever light novel, called “Apple Black Origins: Spectrum and the Spectre”.

This new project will be a prequel to Saturday AM’s popular series, “Apple Black”, created by Nigerian artist/influencer Odunze Oguguo, also known as Whyt Manga. The comic is set to be released on June 11, 2024, and the Saturday AM website describes the story as “Willow and Gideon together take on the evils that riddle Eden in their adventure to find gold.”

According to CBR, the comic will predate the series Apple Black by nine years. The series tells the story of a young sorcerer named Sano, who has been tasked with saving the world. His ancestors consumed Black Apples, granting them sorcery powers. There are currently three manga volumes of this series, with a fourth expected to be released on Nov. 21.

Both Oguguo and Williams are enthusiastic about this collaboration. Oguguo believes Williams brings a lot of expertise to the project, and as a Black female content creator, she has a unique perspective to her art. Williams has been involved in iconic titles such as “Captain America,” “Scarlet Witch”, “Nubia: Queen of the Amazons”, and “Wakanda”.

With the release of “Apple Black Origins: Spectrum and the Spectre”, we can only hope that it is the first of many collaborations between the two. If you're interested in checking out the first three volumes of “Apple Black”, you can purchase them from the Saturday AM website.
