For over 50 years, BLACK ENTERPRISE has been a pioneer in bringing Black-centric business content to the forefront of history. But our impact goes beyond that, as we have also been chronicling the stories of notable Black figures through our groundbreaking coverage and impactful covers. In honor of Black History Month, let's take a look back at 10 BE covers that have amplified the achievements of these remarkable individuals throughout history.
Our first cover features none other than Barack Obama, the 44th President of the United States. This iconic photo, taken by Black Enterprise, captures the essence of his historic presidency and the hope it brought to millions of people. Moving on to our second cover, we have Ernesta Gertrude Procope, the President of the largest Black-owned insurance brokerage.
This powerful image, also captured by Black Enterprise, showcases her unwavering determination and success in a male-dominated industry. Next up, we have a group cover featuring six Men of Entrepreneurial Excellence: John H. Johnson, Herman J.
Russell, Ed Lewis, Nathan Conyers, Earl G. Graves, and Clarence Smith. These trailblazers have left an indelible mark on the business world and continue to inspire the next generation of Black entrepreneurs.
Our fourth cover highlights the incredible Janice Bryant Howroyd, the first African American woman to build and own a billion-dollar company. From humble beginnings, she built ActOne Group, a workforce solutions company, into a billion-dollar empire with her sheer determination and hard work. The fifth cover features Guion Stewart Bluford Jr., the first Black American to venture into space.
This groundbreaking achievement paved the way for future generations of Black astronauts. Our sixth cover features Joan B. and Joan M.
Johnson, the first Black-owned company to be listed on the American Stock Exchange. Their success shattered barriers and opened the door for other Black-owned businesses to follow suit. Moving on to our seventh cover, we have Reginald Lewis, the first African American to build a billion-dollar company.
His legacy of success and philanthropy continues to inspire entrepreneurs and business leaders today. Our eighth cover showcases Ann Fudge, the President of Maxwell Coffee Co. and the first Black woman to head a corporate division.
She broke through the glass ceiling and paved the way for other Black women to do the same. Our ninth cover features civil rights activist and United Nations Ambassador, Andrew Young. His tireless efforts for justice and equality have left an indelible mark on history.
And finally, our tenth cover features Earvin "Magic" Johnson, NBA Hall of Famer, philanthropist, and businessman. His incredible success on and off the court has made him a role model for generations to come.
