In the town of Berhampur, the opposition party BJD has made a plea to the government of Odisha. They are urging the government to waive the loans of farmers and purchase all paddy, regardless of quality, from the hardworking farmers. This comes in the aftermath of heavy rainfall in various parts of the state, causing significant damage to crops.
The demand was raised after the tragic death of a 64-year-old farmer, Banamali Penthei, who allegedly took his own life due to the burden of crop loss and debt. A team of five members from the BJD visited the farmer's family and spoke with them to gather more information.
According to former MLA Bikram Panda, the unseasonal rains have affected almost all paddy crops in the district, both those that were ready to be harvested and those that had already been harvested. This has resulted in the grains not meeting the Fair Average Quality (FAQ) norms. Therefore, the BJD has requested the government to procure the entire paddy from the farmers, regardless of the FAQ norms.
Chandra Sekhar Sahu, former MP of Berhampur, expressed his sorrow over the farmer's death and stated that he had taken loans from private parties, planning to repay them after the harvest. However, with the devastation of his crops, he must have lost all hope and ultimately took his own life. The fact-finding team has also demanded compensation of Rs 25 lakh for the deceased farmer's family.
Sahu further added that the BJD has also requested adequate compensation for all affected farmers and a complete waiver of their farm loans. This, they believe, will not only provide financial support but also boost the morale of the farmers and prevent more suicides. BJP MLA Krushna Chandra Nayak acknowledged that the government is aware of the impact of untimely rains on paddy crops. He also mentioned that Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi is regularly monitoring the situation.
The exact cause of the farmer's death in Baranga will only be known after the district administration conducts an inquiry. In the meantime, Nayak has personally visited the deceased farmer's family and provided them with financial aid of Rs 30,000. The BJD's plea to the government is a reminder of the struggles and hardships faced by farmers and the urgent need for support during times of crisis.
