July 4th 2024.
As the nation heads to the polling stations today, the major TV channels are also gearing up for a big change in their schedules. The general election has led to BBC, Channel 4, and ITV completely shaking up their usual line-up of shows in order to provide extensive coverage of the results as they come in.
While TV channels often have a specific format, especially during the daytime, they have made room for programs solely dedicated to the biggest news story of the day. Let's take a look at what's in store for viewers over the next 24 hours.
BBC is making some significant changes to their usual offerings on Friday, July 5. The morning news show, Breakfast, and the magazine program, Morning Live, will not be airing as usual. Even the popular shows Scam Interceptors and Homes Under the Hammer will be pulled from the schedule. Instead, BBC will be airing Election 2024: The Results, presented by Sophie Raworth and Jon Kay. The duo will keep viewers informed throughout the day and evening, along with reporters such as Fiona Bruce, Victoria Derbyshire, and Naga Munchetty stationed around the country.
The BBC's election coverage will continue until 1pm, when the regular BBC News and local news will be shown. However, it's safe to say that they will still be heavily focused on the election. The specialized programming will then continue until 4:30pm, when a Wimbledon highlights show will take over. Clive Myrie and Laura Kuenessberg will then take over in the morning, with Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak having spent weeks campaigning for this day.
Over on ITV, the daytime favorites such as Good Morning Britain, Lorraine, This Morning, and Loose Women will also be replaced. While Good Morning Britain will still air, it will feature Susanna Reid, who doesn't usually present on Fridays, and will run until 9:25am instead of the usual 9am. Former Labour MP Ed Balls will also be busy, as he will be on the evening coverage of Election 2024 Live: The Results, before his shift on GMB. Tom Bradby, who has previously anchored election nights in 2015, 2017, and 2019, will once again lead ITV's coverage in the evening and early morning. The team will also include former Conservative chancellor George Osborne and former SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon.
Channel 4, known for its unique spin on things, will be taking a different approach to the coverage. Their show, Britain Decides with The Rest is Politics, will feature podcast hosts Alastair Campbell and Rory Stewart, along with Krishnan Guru-Murthy and Emily Maitlis. They will be pulling an all-nighter and continuing with the coverage until 9am, with Cathy Newman presenting from the Conservative and Labour campaign headquarters. And, of course, some of our favorite sofa critics from Gogglebox will be providing their commentary on the results as they come in.
