Ben Fogle has taken to Instagram to post a tribute to his wife Marina on their anniversary, sharing the wild story of how his wedding ring has been through quite the journey.
The 49-year-old TV adventurer, who first appeared on screen in the BBC reality show Castaway 2000, has been married to Marina since 2006. They share two children, son Ludovic and daughter Iona.
To commemorate their 15-year marriage, Ben shared a post on Instagram that explained how his wedding ring had been lost twice.
“Marina, my wife and best friend. This is my second wedding ring. I lost my first ring on the day of our wedding. It fell off while we were swimming in a lake. Eventually we got another. This time I decided to wear it on a cord around my neck.”
He went on to explain how during his climb up Mount Everest, his friend Jacqui gave him a little icon from her native Brazil to keep him safe.
“While climbing Everest it somehow got ripped off between Camp 4 and the summit. It was lost. And then it was found. Half buried in the snow.”
Ben said his ring is a lot like their relationship, “Sometimes we get a little lost, but with work and the help of friends, it endures and grows stronger.”
He added, “Maybe I will lose or misplace it again, but then, I don’t need a ring to prove my love to Marina. We just need our hearts.”
Marina couldn't help but point out the small issue of Ben getting the years wrong. “It’s actually been 17 years my darling… Maths has never been your strong point but luckily being husband, father, friend and supporter is,” she wrote.
The couple have been through a lot, including the heartbreaking loss of their son Willem in 2014. Ben previously said his wife was ‘minutes from dying’ during the traumatic experience.
“The thought of life without her was unbearable,” he said.
Despite the difficulties they have faced, Ben and Marina continue to be devoted to each other and are celebrating 17 years together. Ben’s message to his wife was a beautiful reminder that a ring is not necessary to show love. “Love, peace and happy anniversaries to anyone else celebrating theirs today.”
