This week, a beloved peregrine falcon named Equinox, or Nox for short, passed away from an unknown illness. Nox was hatched atop UC Berkeley's Campanile tower and had recently been released back into the wild after undergoing surgery for a broken wing.
Nox was born to Annie, a falcon who has been nesting at the top of the tower for several years. Annie's nest has been the center of attention for thousands of bird enthusiasts around the world since 2019, thanks to a live-streaming webcam. Tragically, on Monday, Nox was discovered in a weakened state in a resident's yard in Richmond. UC Berkeley News reported that Nox was immediately taken to a veterinary hospital at UC Davis for treatment. Despite receiving a blood transfusion, Nox sadly passed away on Wednesday. The cause of death is still being investigated by veterinarians.
Earlier in the year, in July, Nox suffered a broken wing while at the Berkeley Marina. The falcon was then taken to UC Davis' veterinary hospital for surgery. After a period of rehabilitation at the California Raptor Center, Nox was released at a shoreline park in the East Bay on October 18th.
Nox was one of four chicks born to Annie in May, adding to her impressive record of hatching almost two dozen chicks at the tower since 2016. The UC Berkeley News stated that Nox was a special and cherished member of the falcon family.
On the Facebook page "Cal Falcons", which is dedicated to the birds nesting on the Campanile, many shared their memories of Nox. They affectionately nicknamed him "Little Boy Blue" due to his small size and blue leg band. The group also expressed their gratitude towards the veterinarians at UC Davis who provided care for Nox. In a heartfelt post, they shared their devastation at the loss of Nox, who brought so much joy and energy to their lives whenever he appeared on the webcam.
Nox may no longer be with us, but his memory will live on through the love and admiration of those who followed his journey. Rest in peace, little falcon.
