Renowned BBC newsreader, Clive Myrie, has issued an apology to the network for failing to disclose his outside earnings. The 60-year-old, who is also recognized for his role as the host of BBC Two's popular quiz show Mastermind, reportedly neglected to mention earnings of at least £65,000 from corporate events in the past year.
According to reports, Myrie, as an employee of the BBC, is required to declare his list of engagements on a monthly basis. However, it appears that he failed to include a total of 11 events. This is in line with the network's policy of transparency, as set forth by director-general Tim Davie in 2021. The declarations are published every three months.
The Sunday Times revealed that Myrie did not declare his participation as a debate chairman at GreenTalks Live, an event organized by the Isle of Man's Energy and Sustainability Centre, as well as his appearance as a keynote speaker at Dutch bank ING's Views From The Top dinner at The Gherkin in London. Both engagements are reported to have paid him fees of over £10,000.
In addition, the publication stated that Myrie failed to report nine other engagements, including serving as a guest speaker at Suffolk Chamber of Commerce's Prestige Dinner, hosting the National Residential Landlords Association's conference, and hosting an Intermediary Mortgage Lenders Association lunch. These roles are estimated to be worth between £5,000 and £10,000.
The BBC responded to these revelations by stating that they have reminded Myrie of his responsibilities and that he has apologized for the errors. A spokesperson for the network stated that they have spoken to the presenter and that the external events register will be updated to include the previously omitted engagements in the next quarterly publication.
According to the BBC's most recent annual report, published in March 2024, Myrie is earning a salary between £310,000 and £314,999. The Agency has reached out to Myrie's representative for a comment on the matter.
