Basketball program at Bethune-Cookman University gets boost from ex-Chicago Bulls star, Reggie Theus.
It's been four years since the renowned NBA player, Reggie Theus, was brought on board to lead the men's basketball program at Bethune-Cookman University. And let me tell you, he's done an incredible job! According to HBCU Gameday, Theus took over as coach and athletic director in the 2021-22 school year and since then, he's taken the team to new heights every season.

In his first year with the team, Theus led them to a 7-11 record in the SWAC conference. And from there, he continued to work his magic, with the team going 8-10 and 11-7 in the following two seasons. Currently, the team has a solid record of 11-5 and with only two games left in the conference, the worst they can do is match last season's record. Now that's what I call an impressive track record!

For those who may not know, Theus played college basketball at UNLV and was drafted in the first round by the Chicago Bulls in 1978. He then went on to play for other NBA teams such as the Orlando Magic, the Kansas City/Sacramento Kings, the Atlanta Hawks, and the New Jersey Nets. Throughout his career, he made two All-Star teams and scored over 19,000 points. Talk about a legendary player!

But Theus didn't stop there. After his playing days were over, he took on the role of head coach for the Sacramento Kings and held various coaching positions with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He also served as an assistant coach at the University of Louisville under the legendary Rick Pitino. And as if that wasn't enough, he even led the New Mexico State Aggies as a head coach before joining California State University, Northridge.

And when Theus was offered the opportunity to lead the athletic department at Bethune-Cookman, he couldn't resist. In an interview, he said, "I've been fortunate enough to work in both professional and college sports for most of my career. And now, being given the chance to lead B-CU's athletic department is like a dream come true. To be a part of such a respected HBCU and its culture is truly an honor. I am excited to utilize my experience in professional sports to take the Wildcats to even greater heights. Every moment in this new role is something I look forward to."

It's clear that Theus is a valuable asset to the Bethune-Cookman family and with his leadership, there's no doubt that the team will continue to thrive. We can't wait to see what he'll achieve in the years to come. And let's not forget, Bethune Cookman Faculty recently presented their research on the myths and stereotypes surrounding Black women. It's refreshing to see the university and its staff addressing important issues and making positive changes. Go Wildcats!
