It's been more than 40 years since Bananarama first started out, but they are still going strong. Last night, Keren Woodward and Sarah Dallin, the two remaining members of the band, graced the opening night of the Leamington Spa edition of Tom Kerridge's Pub in the Park.
The crowd was taken back in time as the duo opened their set with 'Nathan Jones', a song from their Walkman era. As the rain clouds cleared from Victoria Park, the duo continued to bring back the bubblegum pop era with their infectious school-days optimism and thudding backbeat.
The set was largely comprised of their hits from the '80s, but they did manage to squeeze in one of their new songs, 'Forever Young'. The track was released in 2022 and was one of the few songs from the new era included in the set.
Bananarama then went on to perform 'It Ain't What You Do', their first ever single, as well as other '80s classics like 'He Was Really Sayin' Something', and the worldwide smash hit 'Venus'. As they harmonised to the 'bob bob shoo be doo wah' refrain, the duo made sure the crowd was kept entertained until the end.
Their set concluded with a mass singalong of 'Na Na Hey Hey', and the crowd was left with the impression of a Now That's What I Call the '80s... revisited.
It's a privilege for Bananarama to have been able to perform for people for over 40 years, and here's hoping for many more years to come.
