According to new research, Australians have the potential to earn almost $1 billion by selling their unwanted gifts this holiday season. E-commerce giant eBay revealed that last year, the average Australian received two unwanted gifts during the festive season. In fact, a whopping 52% of Australians have either already sold or are planning to sell their unwanted gifts this year, in an effort to make some extra money amidst the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.
Interestingly, it seems that younger generations are taking the lead when it comes to selling unwanted gifts. 58% of Generation Z and 57% of millennials are embracing the opportunity to make some extra cash. eBay's data shows that the most popular categories for unwanted gifts that were listed online after Christmas in 2023 were fashion and technology.
When it comes to fashion items, eBay saw a listing every minute, while for tech items, a listing was made every two minutes. It seems that post-Christmas, there was a surge in listings for boys' clothing, with a 162% increase from December 26-31 compared to the earlier part of the month. This was followed by an increase in listings for girls' clothing, tablets, smartwatches, controllers, headphones, clothing tops, video game consoles, pants, and dresses.
Zannie Abbott, from eBay Australia, believes that not every gift will bring joy to the recipient, but that doesn't mean it can't bring happiness to someone else. She encourages people to take advantage of the festive season to declutter their unwanted items, make some extra money, and connect these gifts with those who will truly appreciate and treasure them.
