Auckland café faces bee 'robbing season' as bees start stealing honey from hives.
There's been quite a buzz around a popular café in Auckland, New Zealand as bees have been causing quite a commotion during their so-called "robbing season". These busy insects have been targeting sweet treats and pastries at the Daily Bread café, much to the dismay of customers like Bianca Parshotam.

Photos capturing the chaos show bees crawling all over the tempting treats, prompting Parshotam to voice her concerns to the store. The Point Chevalier location has since taken action by installing new covers for their cabinets in an effort to keep the bees at bay.

Parshotam shared her experience of walking into the store to buy a sandwich, only to be greeted by around 20 bees flying in and making themselves at home on the sweet treats. She noted that the pastries were only partially covered in a cabinet with a large opening for staff to grab items, making it an easy target for the bees.

According to Parshotam, the store explained that the bees were attracted to the sugar in their products, as many were either made with or glazed with it. Daily Bread's general manager, Kieran Evans, confirmed that they have taken the issue seriously by installing a custom casing to address the immediate problem and relocating the bees.

Evans revealed that the issue may have stemmed from a hive on the store's roof as part of a project to promote better city pollination. However, even after removing the hive, the bees continued to be a nuisance. Experts suggested that there may be a poorly maintained hive in the area that was also attracting the bees.

To further resolve the issue, the store has set up a "fake" hive through another company to relocate the remaining bee population. While they are sad to have moved their original hive, Evans emphasized that it was necessary to ensure the safety of their customers and products.

Experts have informed the store that it is currently "robbing season" for bees, where they start storing honey for the winter.
