The Atlanta Board of Education has come to a unanimous decision to appoint Bryan Johnson as the new superintendent of Atlanta Public Schools. This decision was made during a meeting held on July 8 and comes after the board declared Johnson as the sole finalist back in June, as reported by WSB-TV. Johnson, who hails from Tennessee, was previously the superintendent of Hamilton County Schools in Chattanooga. He has received numerous accolades for his work in the county, including the 2021 Superintendent of the Year award and being listed as a "Superintendent to Watch."
In response to his appointment, Johnson expressed his excitement for this "destination job" and his eagerness to work collaboratively with the Board to ensure that all students are prepared for their future. He also mentioned the town hall meetings he attended, which gave him the opportunity to directly hear from the community and staff about areas of improvement.
"We look forward to working with teachers, leaders, staff, and our community as we focus on areas such as literacy, special education, math, and college and career preparation. Together, we will transform Atlanta Public Schools into one of the best urban school districts in the country," Johnson stated.
This search for a new superintendent came after Dr. Lisa Herring's contract was not renewed in 2023. The school system, once plagued by a cheating scandal in 2009, is determined to continue improving as an urban district.
According to ABOE Board Chairperson Erika Y. Mitchell, this is an exciting day for APS as they welcome Dr. Johnson into their community. Mitchell also expressed her gratitude towards her fellow board members for their dedication and persistence during the search process.
"We also want to thank Dr. Danielle Battle for her leadership and partnership as we transition to Dr. Bryan Johnson," Mitchell added.
Mitchell reassured the community that all parties involved are committed to ensuring the quality of education for the students during this transition. She emphasized the importance of prioritizing the students and their needs.
"After two weeks of community engagement, Dr. Johnson and the Board have listened, learned, and gained a better understanding of what is important to our parents, students, APS staff, and community stakeholders. We remain committed to putting our students first during this leadership transition," Mitchell stated.
Johnson is set to officially begin his role as superintendent on August 5, with interim superintendent Dr. Danielle Battle assisting him in the transition. In the meantime, Johnson is looking forward to working closely with the community to continue the growth and progress of Atlanta Public Schools.
