Ask your mentor for tips on identifying if you're being subtly pushed aside at your job.

I am feeling overlooked and excluded at work despite not being laid off. Is this just in my head or is there a valid reason for my feelings?

Ask your mentor for tips on identifying if you're being subtly pushed aside at your job.

Dear Stuck in the Middle, I understand your frustration and feelings of being overlooked and invisible in your current work situation. It can be disheartening when we feel like we are not being challenged or included in the same way we used to be. You are not alone in this feeling, and it is important to address it before it starts to affect your confidence and performance.

It's important to remember that not all career setbacks are obvious and come with a clear explanation or solution. You may be experiencing what is known as "career limbo" - a state where there is no clear feedback or direction for your future. This can be a result of workplace behaviors, such as the "Quiet Sidelining Phenomenon," where individuals are slowly and subtly removed from visibility, opportunities, and influence.

It's crucial to recognize that this is not a reflection of your recent layoffs or performance issues. It's a gradual and insidious process that leaves you feeling confused and doubting yourself. You may even find yourself overworking to prove your worth and regain your visibility.

But it's essential to understand that being busy does not necessarily mean being valued or invested in. There are some red flags to look out for in this type of situation, such as others being given stretch assignments or promotions while you are not, receiving vague or inconsistent feedback, and not advancing despite being busy. If you are experiencing these signs, it's time to do a "Power Audit" and ask yourself some important questions.

What has actually changed, and what just feels different? Who holds the power and controls access to opportunities in your organization? When was the last time you advocated for yourself?

It's essential to reclaim your power and take control of your career. You can start by initiating a "Career Clarity Conversation" with your manager. This is an opportunity to gather feedback and gain clarity on your future within the company.

It's crucial to bring evidence of your accomplishments to this conversation to support your value and performance. Additionally, it would be best to maintain regular updates with your manager and keep them informed of your progress and goals. Don't be afraid to reach out to decision-makers and mentors within the company as well.

If, after taking these steps, you still feel stuck and undervalued, it may be time to consider moving on. Your late father's advice, "When they stop promoting you, it's time to leave," holds true. Explore internal opportunities or start networking externally to keep your options open.

But don't panic; make sure you have a solid plan in place before making any decisions. Finally, it's crucial to shift your mindset from "What's wrong with me?" to "What is this environment showing me?" Remember, your career is not happening to you; you are in control. Don't let yourself shrink in the face of silence; use it as motivation to strive for clarity and reclaim your power.

I believe in you, and I know you can navigate this challenging situation. Keep pushing forward, and never hesitate to reach out for guidance and support.
