Mikel Arteta is reportedly pushing Arsenal's hierarchy to sign Al-Hilal midfielder Ruben Neves, as the Gunners are looking to bolster their midfield options in the January transfer window. Thomas Partey is currently sidelined until at least the start of next year after undergoing surgery, leaving the club in search of viable replacements.
One such option is Aston Villa's Douglas Luiz, however, it may prove difficult to sign him as the Brazilian signed a new contract last year which keeps him tied to the club until 2026.
Sport has reported that Neves is on Arteta's personal wishlist, and the Arsenal manager has already approached the club's board about signing the Portugal international in the January transfer window. Newcastle United are also interested in the midfielder, who joined Al-Hilal in a £47 million deal in June.
Neves had spent six seasons with Wolves before his departure, after joining the club for £15.8 million in 2017. He made it clear, prior to his move to the Saudi Pro League, that he wanted to join an elite team in Europe.
"I want to be here but I never hide that I want to play Champions League football," Neves said. "It’s a hard decision. Me and my family love it here, but in football you have to go for your main goals."
With a move to Arsenal potentially on the cards, Neves could soon be playing in the Champions League. However, this will depend on whether Arsenal's hierarchy can successfully negotiate a deal with Al-Hilal.
