AP updates standards for newsrooms to ensure responsible use of AI in reporting.
The Associated Press has released new guidelines to address the rise of AI-generated content, including ChatGPT. In response to this technological inclusion, they have updated their widely used stylebook and announced the news on their blog and social media pages.

Amanda Barrett, AP's vice president for Standards and Inclusion, shared that the platform does not see AI as a replacement of journalists in any way. She stated, “It is the responsibility of AP journalists to be accountable for the accuracy and fairness of the information we share.”

The guidelines state that AP writers are prohibited from using the tool to curate “publishable” content, but they are allowed to explore, “with caution,” ChatGPT’s abilities given their licensing agreement with OpenAI. This means that the platform acknowledges the potential of AI-generated content, but it still does not consider its “outputs” as confirmed sources and must be monitored.

This is a major concern in the journalistic field, as well as beyond it. For example, many online platforms, mainly social media websites, have had to make disclaimers when popular images are revealed to have been digitally manufactured.

It is clear that the influence of generative AI is growing in all media spheres. While the public and AP are still uncovering the full capacity of this technology, they are taking steps to ensure that it is used responsibly.
