Anthony Anderson is a champion for diabetes education and fitness, living his best life with type 2 diabetes.
Anthony Anderson is a passionate advocate for educating people about type 2 diabetes, a chronic illness he has been living with since he was diagnosed in 2002.

Speaking to People about how great he’s been feeling, the Black-ish star explained the key factors to living a fulfilling life while managing type 2 diabetes.

“It’s important to be diligent about the diet and exercise prescribed by our doctors,” Anderson said. “We can still enjoy our favorite treats in moderation, but we should be aware that if we eat a cupcake, it’s going to take us that much longer at the gym.”

At the end of the day, it comes down to discipline and determination. Anderson knows it’s hard to make the right choices and stick to a fitness regime, especially when the alarm rings in the morning.

“We all know the feeling of dreading the gym,” Anderson said. “But once we get there and get our bodies in motion, we always feel better.”

The actor also has a supportive network of comedians to help him stay motivated and active.

“I have a core group of friends including George Lopez, Cedric the Entertainer, D.L. Hughley, Don Cheadle, and Chris Spencer,” he said. “We have a group chat called ‘The Thread’, and every morning we challenge each other to do pushups and sit-ups. We lean on each other when it comes to making the right choices, and we share our own journeys with each other.”

Anderson is proud to be a role model for people living with type 2 diabetes, and to demonstrate that it is possible to lead a healthy and active life.
