Former NFL superstar Earl Thomas has been the victim of a sophisticated identity fraud scam. His ex-wife's new boyfriend, Kevin J. Thompson, was arrested back in June for reportedly stealing Thomas' identity and swindling him out of close to $2 million dollars.
Sergeant Brandon Veal from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office reported that Thompson is now facing charges of identity theft, forgery, money laundering, credit card fraud, computer fraud, and bank fraud. It appears that Thompson had a driver's license and ID forged with Thomas' information and his own photo on it in order to open a fake bank account and transfer car titles to himself.
Thompson was arrested at a Jefferson Financial location while driving a blue Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV that he had illegally taken out of Thomas' name. Investigators now believe that Thompson was not only using the vehicle for himself but was also selling other car titles he had fraudulently acquired. It's still unclear how Thompson got physical possession of the SUV.
When Thomas' Texas credit union noticed suspicious activity on his account at a Jefferson Financial location, Thompson was arrested a second time for his fraudulent activities. This time he was trying to retrieve the Rolls-Royce and was driving a different stolen vehicle. On top of that, Thompson had deposited Thomas' NFL checks into various fraudulent accounts and had even stolen a substantial amount from his retirement fund.
Thompson is now out on a $730,000 bond and federal investigators are now looking into the case. Thomas was an NFL star from 2010 to 2019 and was part of the Seattle Seahawks' legendary “Legion of Boom.” His loss is a reminder of the dangers of identity theft and the importance of being vigilant with personal information and bank accounts.
