The latest trend on Twitch is taking censorship to a whole new level - one that has even the platform doubting what is allowed.
It all started a couple of weeks ago with streamer Morgpie, who pretended to be naked using deceptive camera angles. This sparked an avalanche of copycats, with virtual censor bars being used to make it look like they were nude.
Morgpie and some of the other streamers were temporarily banned, until Twitch updated their policy on nudity.
Now, even more streamers are joining in on the trend - including the popular female streamer Amouranth. During a recent stream, she appeared to be nude, but had two censor bars covering her body. Of course, she was really just wearing underwear, like Morgpie was during her topless-but-not-really streams.
The trend has also evolved to include male streamers, like Tectone, who appeared on stream with a virtual censor bar covering his crotch. He was, however, fully clothed underneath.
Twitch's policy on nudity is clear - it's not allowed. But with the current trend, streamers are getting around that by wearing underwear and making it look like they are completely naked, with the help of censor bars and pixelation.
At first, Twitch seemed to be okay with more nudity on the platform, but soon reversed their decision due to community backlash. Twitch CEO Dan Clancy commented on the change, saying “We are in the process of pushing out updates to our Community Guidelines that reflect this change. It will take a few days for both this blog and for the new Community Guidelines to be translated.”
It's still unclear how Twitch wants to handle this trend, and whether or not they will eventually put a stop to it. But with so many streamers participating, banning everyone would result in a lot of bans.
