On Monday, an Amazon driver was delivering a parcel in Palm City, Florida, when tragedy struck. The driver was bitten on the leg by a highly venomous Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake, and was rushed to the hospital in a very serious condition. The snake had been coiled up by the front door of the house, and it bit her on the back of the leg, just above the knee.
The driver, who has not been identified, managed to call 911. Emergency services used her phone's GPS to find her location. She was in a gated community called Highland Reserve.
The Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake is considered to be the most dangerous snake in the US. It typically lives in forests, sandhills, swampy areas, and wet prairies. The Martin County Sheriff’s Office warned residents that they should always be mindful of their surroundings when in areas where rattlesnakes can be found. They noted that people may not see the snake if they're distracted by their phones or wearing ear pods.
Branden Baribeau, a spokesperson for Amazon, said their thoughts were with the driver and they hoped she made a full recovery. He added that they were looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensuring that their drivers understood they should not complete deliveries if they feel unsafe.
This incident happened shortly after a man in the UK was bitten by a false widow spider and had to go to the hospital. Shane Parmenter, 36, from Chelmsford, Essex, was bitten while trying to squash the spider in his recording studio. His leg had swollen up ‘like a balloon’ due to an infection from the bite.
We hope that the Amazon driver makes a full recovery after her brush with the dangerous Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake, and that Shane Parmenter is on the mend as well. It's a reminder for all of us to observe our surroundings and take precautions when in the presence of wild animals.
