During Friday's episode of This Morning, TV host Alison Hammond showed her caring side by comforting a Hollywood legend who opened up about their struggles with anxiety. Alison, who is widely known as a national treasure, was joined by her co-presenter Dermot O'Leary as they interviewed stars from the upcoming TV series Landman. The show, which features big names such as Demi Moore and Jon Hamm, is set in Texas and explores the state's famous oil industry.
One of the stars in the cast, Billy Bob Thornton, joined Alison, Dermot, and Ali Larter on the couch to chat about the series. During their conversation, Alison asked Billy Bob about his sleeping habits, given the hectic schedule of media and press work that comes with being a Hollywood actor. The 69-year-old actor, known for his role in Bad Santa, revealed that he is more suited to a "rock and roll lifestyle" and often finds himself awake at 5am, only to sleep until the afternoon the next day.
As Dermot joked about Billy Bob's current early start according to his body clock, the actor opened up about his struggles with sleep and anxiety. "I got two-and-a-half hours of sleep last night," he shared. "I was in bed and I thought I was paralyzed for a while. I was having these circular thoughts and when I closed my eyes I started having hallucinations."
Billy Bob went on to explain that his sleep cycle had been messed up on Thursday night due to early-morning media work for ITV. "It was crazy. I couldn't get to sleep to save my life. My solution was to go on the patio at the hotel at 6am because I was so nerved up. I have an anxiety disorder – I mean, I really do. It's bad." He even admitted to calling his wife and daughter at 6am for support.
Moved by Billy Bob's struggles, Alison stood up and offered him a hug. "Babes, do you know what we normally do for anxiety? We bring it in, come and have an Ali hug," she said. The actor's candidness about his mental health is not new, as he has previously shared about his OCD and phobias.
In 2001, he even admitted to having a fear of silverware. "I'm afraid of it. I'm not afraid of cheap silverware – it's real silver that I'm creeped out by, or maybe silverware that I think people might have used for digging and things." With such open and honest discussions about his struggles, Billy Bob is breaking the stigma around mental health and inspiring others to do the same.
