Acclaimed Scottish actor, Alan Cumming, has been selected as the new artistic director of Pitlochry Festival Theatre. With his recent success in the hit production, The Traitors, it's hard to believe that Cumming's first professional performance was actually 40 years ago at the Tron Theatre in Glasgow. His talent was undeniable and his portrayal of Hamlet in the West End was praised as a sign of his immense potential.
After a thorough three-month search, Cumming's appointment was announced, and he expressed his excitement to showcase Pitlochry to the world. "For me, the theatre and Scotland have always been intertwined," he shared. "My heart is in the Highlands, just like Robert Burns, and becoming the artistic director of Pitlochry Festival Theatre feels like coming home. I am eager to use my experience and passion to elevate this hidden gem and celebrate Scotland's rich theatrical history by bringing in top artists from around the world."
Cumming's vision for the theatre is to make it a welcoming space for all and to remain an integral part of the community. He quoted Burns again, saying "I will dare to be honest and fear no labor," showing his determination to push boundaries and create meaningful experiences for audiences. Most of all, he can't wait to share the magic of Pitlochry with the rest of the world, and vice versa.
Although Cumming will officially take on the role of artistic director in January 2025, his first programmed season won't begin until 2026. In the meantime, the 2025 season will feature exciting productions such as The Great Gatsby, Grease, The 39 Steps, and four new plays in the Studio. This will also mark the end of Elizabeth Newman's tenure as artistic director, concluding with her production of The Sound of Music in December 2024.
Newman expressed her enthusiasm for Cumming's appointment, calling him an exceptional artist and leader who will bring fresh and dynamic perspectives to the theatre. She also shared her excitement to return as an audience member and witness the impact of Cumming's artistic direction and the work of the world-class artists he will bring to Pitlochry.
Kris Bryce, the Executive Director, is also thrilled to work alongside Cumming and believes that his storytelling abilities will bring people together and create powerful experiences that will inspire and empower the community.
