AKA sisters gather handbags for homeless women in Atlanta.
The women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. are making a meaningful impact in their community by filling purses with essential items for those in need. Teaming up with Atlanta Housing on January 19th, a local chapter came together to support unhoused women during the harsh winter season.

As reported by 11Alive, the sorority collaborated with the housing authority to pack gently used handbags with toiletries and other necessities. A total of 145 purses were carefully filled with supplies, providing much-needed aid and hope during the cold months. This act of service will benefit a local nonprofit, Dignify A Diva Inc., which has been distributing equipped bags, backpacks, and overnight bags to unhoused individuals since its establishment in 2015. With the sorority's help, the organization has now given out over 12,000 bags to those in need.

This initiative was carried out in commemoration of the National Day of Service, observed on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Across the country, service organizations came together to volunteer their time and resources to improve their communities. By addressing the pressing issue of homelessness in the United States, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is staying true to their mission of uplifting mankind in various ways. In fact, in 2020, the sorority raised more than $15,000 through their virtual Peer-to-Peer Fundraising campaign and provided monthly catered dinners to over 50 residents of Nicholas House, a local shelter for families in need.

Their efforts are greatly needed in Atlanta, as well as in other parts of the country, where the number of unhoused individuals and families continues to rise. In response, city officials have urged Hartsfield-Jackson Airport to develop a plan to support the growing number of people who have sought refuge inside the facility. Additionally, The Concerned Black Clergy of Metropolitan Atlanta organized a "Sleep the Night Out" event in December 2023 to show solidarity with those experiencing homelessness in the city.

It is heartwarming to see the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. using their time and resources to make a positive impact in their community. Their dedication to service and commitment to bettering the lives of those in need is truly inspiring. This act of kindness and generosity towards the unhoused women in Atlanta is a reminder of the importance of lending a helping hand to those who need it most. The post about their efforts was first shared on Black Enterprise, highlighting their admirable contributions to society.
