Air travel within the country increases by 5.7% to 132 million passengers in June, according to DGCA.
In the bustling city of Mumbai, there has been a notable increase in India's domestic air passenger traffic. According to the monthly data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Tuesday, there was a 5.76 per cent growth, with a total of 1.32 crore passengers in June compared to 1.24 crore in the same month last year.

Among the various airlines, budget carrier IndiGo dominated the market with a staggering 60.5 per cent share, carrying 80.86 lakh passengers. Following closely behind were Air India, run by the Tata Group, with 17.47 lakh passengers, and Vistara with 12.84 lakh passengers. Air India's market share was 13.1 per cent while Vistara's was 9.6 per cent, according to the DGCA data.

It is interesting to note that Vistara is a joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines, with a 51:49 per cent ownership. Another airline under the Tata Group, AIX Connect, transported 7.70 lakh passengers, accounting for 5.8 per cent of the market share.

Together, the three Tata Group airlines made up 28.5 per cent of the total domestic passenger traffic in June, as reported by the DGCA. Additionally, SpiceJet flew 7.02 lakh passengers and Akasa Air, which is approaching its two-year mark, transported 5.90 lakh passengers, making up 5.3 per cent and 4.4 per cent of the overall domestic passenger traffic, respectively.

Interestingly, Akasa Air had the highest on-time performance (OTP) among the four metro airports in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, with a rate of 79.5 per cent in June 2024. On the other hand, SpiceJet had the lowest OTP among the seven major airlines in the country, with a rate of 46.1 per cent, according to the DGCA.

In conclusion, the data released by the DGCA clearly shows the significant growth in domestic air passenger traffic in India, with IndiGo leading the market and the Tata Group airlines making a substantial contribution. It will be interesting to see how these numbers change in the coming months and how the airlines continue to compete in this ever-growing industry.
