AICTE head says upcoming employees need to be ready for dealing with AI difficulties.
In a recent speech at the Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan Deemed to be University, All India Council for Technical Education chairman TG Sitharam highlighted the need for the future workforce to be prepared for the challenges brought by Artificial Intelligence (AI). He acknowledged that AI has both sparked hope and instilled fear in the human mind, but stressed that it is crucial for us to equip ourselves to adapt to these new challenges.

Sitharam emphasized that every time a new technology has emerged, it has caused some fear among people. However, we have always found a way to adapt and overcome these challenges, and the same must be done with AI. He addressed some of the common questions surrounding AI, such as the fear of humans being replaced by machines, the potential for job loss, and the possibility of machines becoming more intelligent than humans. He urged for these questions to be addressed with different perspectives and ideas.

The AICTE chairman reminded the audience that it is humans who have created these technologies for their convenience, but have now found themselves in a difficult situation. He also noted that just a decade ago, the existence and capabilities of AI were unknown, but it has now surpassed human performance in various fields and is constantly evolving at an incredible speed.

However, Sitharam also reassured that similar concerns were raised when computers, mobile phones, and the internet were introduced, but we eventually learned to embrace them. He believes the same can be done with AI and other disruptive technologies, with the guidance of the academic and industry community and proper implementation of their suggestions.

Sitharam stressed the importance of working together to create a workforce that is equipped to handle emerging technologies. He mentioned that AICTE is taking significant steps, such as introducing courses in emerging technologies and conducting faculty development programs, to prepare Indian students and faculty for the use of AI.

The chairman commended the university for organizing ‘Proxima 2024’, a two-day HR conclave that brings together professionals from various industries and students to engage in intellectual discussions, share innovative ideas, and gain experiential learning. SOA Vice-Chancellor Pradipta Kumar Nanda, who presided over the meeting, also highlighted the university's efforts to bridge the gap between institutes and industries, as emphasized in the New Education Policy.

In conclusion, Sitharam reiterated the importance of upskilling and reskilling our workforce with advanced technologies and praised SOA for providing a platform for students to harness their potential. He expressed the AICTE's goal to work towards creating a workforce that is equipped to handle the challenges of the future.
