Advertising on Facebook: worth it or a waste of resources?
Advertising has evolved exponentially over the last century. In the past, all you had were printed advertisements in newspapers and magazines, or through direct mail. Then, with the introduction of radio and television, the "madmen of Madison Avenue" could further engage the public with their 30-second ad spots.

Though television advertising is still strong, print advertising is rapidly shrinking and has been surpassed by digital media. It is estimated that digital online advertising could make up 30-50% of total advertising spend in the next ten years. This is expected due to the ever-increasing amount of media consumption that is conducted through computers, tablets, and smartphones.

The digital advertising landscape has been dominated by the display banner ads for the past 15 years. It is estimated that several hundred billion of these appear on computer screens every month. The "Google Display Network" is one of the major players in this industry.

Recently, there has been a new player on the scene: Facebook Ads. When they first arrived, they were cheap and low-key, but in recent years the cost of ads has increased by 40%, and the number of ads that occupy the page has also grown. This is because Facebook is attempting to monetize its 1 billion users and appease its shareholders.

A recent study by Wordstream compared the reach and effectiveness of Google and Facebook Ads. It showed that while Facebook reached 51% of the world's internet users, Google reached 90%, and that Google served up 180 billion "Ad" impressions per month compared to Facebook's 1 trillion page views. Google's Display Network was also more effective, with an average "Click Through Rate" of 0.4%, which is 10 times higher than a Facebook ad.

It is ultimately up to you to decide which platform has been most effective for your own advertising campaigns. Have you tried Facebook ads? How about the Google Display Network? Share your stories and experiences in the comments below.
