Coronation Street actress Helen Flanagan has expressed her gratitude towards her fans for the outpouring of support she received after revealing her diagnosis of psychosis. In an Instagram story, the Rosie Webster star thanked everyone for their kind messages and also shared her initial apprehension about opening up about her mental health struggles.
"I just wanted to say thank you so much for all your lovely messages," she said in the video. "It may sound silly, but I was a bit nervous about my post yesterday and felt a bit anxious. But thank you for the messages."
Helen recently shared her diagnosis of psychosis, which she experienced as a result of a "really bad" reaction to her ADHD medication. She explained that she had been feeling "not great" in her head during the Christmas holidays and decided to take medication to help cope with being a working single mother of three. However, the medication triggered a psychotic episode, which she was unaware of at the time.
"What is psychosis?" Helen asked, before sharing that it is when someone perceives or interprets reality differently from those around them. It can manifest in various ways, such as hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking and speech. Helen opened up about her struggles with psychosis and how it affected her work, particularly her role as Miss Scarlett in the UK tour of Cluedo 2. She had to pull out of the production, and her Corrie co-star and Strictly Come Dancing winner Ellie Leach stepped in to take her place. Despite the disappointment, Helen's main focus was getting better for her children.
The actress also shared that she is now in a much happier place and has been working on herself a lot. She credits therapy for helping her on her journey to recovery. Her honest post received an outpouring of support from friends and fans, with many sending her messages of love and encouragement.
Helen and her partner Scott Sinclair made the mutual decision to split in 2022 after being together for 13 years. They share three children: Matilda, eight, Delilah, five, and two-year-old Charlie.
