A young man, only 18 years old, has found himself in trouble with the law after allegedly causing damage to a police car in Sydney's north shore. The incident occurred on Thursday at 10pm when police were called to Henry Lawson Reserve in McMahons Point in response to a concern for someone's welfare. It was during this call-out that an officer approached the teenager's car and attempted to speak to him.
However, instead of cooperating, the 18-year-old allegedly drove off, ultimately hitting a signpost on a grass verge. The officer, undeterred, returned to his own vehicle and tried to stop the teenager's car. But things took a dangerous turn when the young driver accelerated harshly and collided with the police car not once, but twice. As a result, both cars suffered significant damage.
Fortunately, the young driver was apprehended at the scene and taken into custody. He did sustain some facial injuries from the crashes and was treated by paramedics from NSW Ambulance. He was then taken to Royal North Shore Hospital, under police guard, where he was found to be in a stable condition.
Meanwhile, the officer involved in the incident suffered a sore neck and knee but did not require any further medical attention. The young man was discharged from the hospital the following morning at around 6:30am and was then taken to Chatswood Police Station. There, he was charged with multiple offenses, including using an offensive weapon, assaulting a police officer, negligent driving, and driving with a cancelled license.
The teenager was denied bail and had to appear at Manly Local Court the same day. He is set to appear at Campbelltown Local Court on Tuesday, December 10.
