A short review of Hotel du Vin in Newcastle, highlighting its features and services.
Alister Tenneb had a lovely weekend escape at the luxurious Hotel du Vin in the lively city of Newcastle. Just a short three hour drive from Scotland's central belt, Newcastle is the perfect destination for a weekend getaway for those traveling south of the border. It could be the city's isolated location from other big cities that gives it such a buzzing atmosphere, but there is never a dull moment in this vibrant city.

Our accommodation for the weekend was the Hotel du Vin, located just a ten minute stroll along the riverside to the Millennium Bridge and city center. As with all the hotels in this boutique chain, the building has been creatively and thoughtfully converted. In this case, it used to be the Edwardian headquarters of the Tyne Tees Shipping Company, with original exposed brickwork and subtle nods to its historic past throughout. The exterior is mostly the original facade, with preserved architectural details, while the interior exudes a warm and inviting atmosphere, with modern spot lighting and stone or slate floors.

Upon entering the hotel, we were welcomed into a cozy and comfortable open lounge area, adorned with tan vintage leather chairs, tweed fabrics, and dark woods, all centered around a charming stove fire. The bar area, with its striking metal counter, and the restaurant beyond, both carry on the wine theme that is present throughout the decor. Outside, the buildings form a charming courtyard, overlooked by an elevated outdoor dining area and a playful heated hobbit house cigar snug. The central themes and colors flow seamlessly into the rooms, which boast high ceilings, art nouveau wallpaper, roll top baths, and trendy color schemes. The bathrooms are spacious and stylish, and come equipped with lovely complimentary L'occitane products. Our room had a large balcony with a delightful view of the courtyard and the river, making it the perfect spot to enjoy our morning coffee.

The location of the hotel, by the riverside and away from the busy city center, was ideal for us. It offered free and convenient parking, car charging stations nearby, and a peacefulness that is not easily found in the city center. We thoroughly enjoyed our riverside walk, passing by numerous lively bars and cafes, on our way into the city center. We also discovered a few charming and traditional local pubs, with plenty of character and history.

Our dining experience at the Bistro in Hotel du Vin was exceptional. The wine theme that runs throughout the hotel is also present in the restaurant, with an award-winning glass walled wine cellar located next to the main dining area. To start off our meal, we indulged in a classic Bloody Mary, which set the tone for an outstanding dinner. We opted for the steak tartare and the Cumbrae Rockerfeller oysters for our starters, and both were absolutely divine. The tartare was perfectly balanced, with the right amount of pepper, parsley, garlic, cornichons, and egg yolk, which we were able to mix ourselves. The grilled pain de campagne that accompanied it added a delightful crunch. The oysters were fresh and zesty, served on a bed of spinach and glazed with herb breadcrumbs. The service was attentive and knowledgeable, and their recommendation of a Beaujolais to pair with the tartare was spot on.

For our main course, I had the duck confit, served with a dandelion and pancetta salad, while my partner enjoyed the pan fried cod, served on a bed of lentils and topped with Cavolo nero. Both dishes were cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. Our sides of Camembert pomme puree, sautéed spinach, and a fresh mixed leaf salad were all excellent additions to our meal. To finish off our dining experience, we shared a French cheese board, with highlights including the 24 month Comte Artisan and Fourme D'ambert Laque, accompanied by a 10 year old Tawny port.

The breakfast the next morning was just as impressive as our dinner the night before. I ordered the eggs Benedict, while my partner opted for the kippers, both of which were expertly prepared and presented on crisp, white, starched tablecloths. We also had the option to order charcuterie from the kitchen, which was a lovely touch. We couldn't resist indulging in some warm and fresh croissants and pain au chocolate to top off our breakfast, setting us up perfectly for a day of exploring the city center.

Newcastle has so much to offer for a weekend visitor. It is famous for its nightlife and shopping, and we were lucky enough to visit during Newcastle Restaurant Week, where we were able to sample some of the best gastronomic delights the city has to offer, through unique and exclusive menus.
