July 14th 2023.
It's been another exciting month for mobile gamers, with the release of Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeon, What The Car?, and Netflix's classic Bloons 6 TD. With the summer games drought upon us, mobile games are definitely beginning to pick up the slack. Here's a look at some of the best mobile games to play this month.
Lacuna: Sci-Fi Noir Adventure
iOS & Android, £5.99
This cyberpunk noir detective game is set in a near future dystopian world. When a political assassination stokes interplanetary tensions, your hard smoking investigator is called in to uncover the truth. With an immersive setting and great looking visuals, Lacuna will have you hooked as you try to piece together the mystery. The majority of dialogue is unvoiced, but the unusual detection gameplay loop and immersive setting make this game every bit as engaging as it was on PC and consoles. Score: 7/10
Teeny Tiny Town
iOS & Android, Free – full game £2.99
This fun little puzzler requires a series of merges, where three or more tiles of the same variety pop together into an evolved new tile. Each level has a strictly limited number of squares in which to undertake your merging antics, deploying a small supply of tactical powers – swap two squares, delete a tile – to correct mistakes or reverse bad luck. You get a small number of moves per day for free, but you can watch an ad to earn more or pay to unlock the full game and all its maps. Score: 6/10
What The Car?
iOS, included with Apple Arcade
This is definitely not your average racing game. Your cars have legs of various lengths and degrees of spindliness, or a jetpack strapped to them, lurching and leaping around imaginatively designed courses. Graphically beautiful and full of Easter eggs, this is a not-quite-driving adventure overflowing with charm and wit. Score: 8/10
Bloons TD 6
iOS & Android, Included with Netflix
Bloons TD 6 is an addictive Tower Defense game with chaotic, brightly coloured visuals and an immense profusion of power-ups. As you gradually unlock more monkey towers, you'll start to take on higher difficulties and enjoy a compelling difficulty curve in this near-perfect genre exemplar. Score: 9/10
Dungeon Abyss
iOS, Free
Dungeon Abyss is a promising roguelite dungeon crawler with cute, procedurally generated levels to be plundered and fought through. Traps, switch-controlled doors, and various denominations of enemy lurk everywhere – along with treasure chests and breakable barrels. The beta includes two 10-level worlds to try out and is completely free. Score: N/A
Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon
iOS & Android, included with Netflix
Pocket Dungeon is a match-three game with a few interesting twists. It's still mostly about skill, with progress and rewards earned through diligence and ability, and true to the Shovel Knight ethos. Score: 8/10
Maze Defenders: Tower Defense
iOS & Android, Free
Maze Defenders is a Tower Defense game with colourful turrets, characterful graphics, and chunky loot chests. The microtransactions are well-balanced, and the game is a pleasure to look at as well as play. While it's not as accomplished as Ironhide's Kingdom Rush series or Bloons TD 6, Maze Defenders is still a great contender to enter the fray. Score: 6/10
It's been a great month for mobile gaming, with an array of games to suit all kinds of players. If you're looking for something new to play, there's plenty of options, from classic Tower Defense to sci-fi noir adventures. So grab your device and get ready for some serious gaming!
