A couple from Coffs Harbour was in for a surprise when they decided to have eggs for breakfast. Rachael Ward told 9News.com.au that her fiancé Jamie was making breakfast on Saturday when he stumbled upon an unusual egg. To his surprise, as he cracked open the egg, he found another fully-formed egg inside. And not just any egg, it was a tiny and perfectly shaped one, weighing only 2 grams. It was like a real-life nesting doll!
Ward mentioned that Jamie was quite shocked when he saw the second egg inside. He couldn't believe his eyes and exclaimed, "What is this?" She took a look and initially thought it was just another yolk, but upon touching it, she realized it was hard. The egg was only 10mm in size, making it one of the smallest chicken eggs in the world. Although rare, finding a smaller egg inside a bigger one is not unheard of.
Experts say that this phenomenon is called a counter-peristalsis contraction. It occurs when a second oocyte (or ovary cell) is released by a hen's ovary before the original egg has been properly formed and laid. Ward mentioned that her fiancé was a bit scared and didn't want to eat the bigger egg. So they decided to keep the tiny egg at home, wrapped in tissue, in their fridge.
The couple had bought the eggs from a local hobby farmer, Gerald Gauci. They were surprised by their discovery and took the little egg back to Gauci. He measured it at just over 10mm and weighing exactly 2g. This is not the first time such a tiny egg has been found. In 2016, a woman in Britain discovered that her chicken had hatched a 1.55cm egg, breaking the Guinness World Record for the world's smallest chicken egg.
Ward and Jamie were thrilled to have found such a rare and fascinating egg. They were still in awe of their discovery and decided to share it with their friends and family. Ward said, "We were just very surprised" and added that they were planning to keep the tiny egg as a keepsake. They were also excited to tell Gauci about their discovery and he was equally amazed by it.
