A man has recently been apprehended and charged with over 50 counts of drug and gun-related offenses following an extensive international manhunt that spanned four different countries. The investigation was initially launched back in October 2022 by the New South Wales Police, who formed a special task force to investigate allegations of cocaine distribution in Sydney. Prior to this arrest, three other men had already been charged and were awaiting trial.
In January of last year, the NSW Police enlisted the help of the Australian Federal Police in tracking down a 32-year-old man who they believed had fled to Bangkok, Thailand using a falsified passport. After nearly a year of searching, the man was finally arrested on November 8th and was subsequently detained in Thailand for almost 11 months on charges related to immigration offenses. However, in October of this year, he was granted a royal pardon and deported back to Australia on a flight bound for Brisbane.
However, during a layover in Manila, Philippines, the man attempted to book a flight to Istanbul, Turkey with a stop in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The Australian Federal Police immediately alerted their colleagues in Manila, Abu Dhabi, and Ankara, Turkey, who then informed local authorities of the man's impending arrival. Despite these efforts, he was denied entry into Istanbul and was instead redirected to Abu Dhabi, where he arrived on November 7th.
After arriving in Abu Dhabi, the man allegedly made another attempt to fly to Lebanon but was stopped and sent back to Manila. Upon his return to the Philippines on November 8th, he allegedly tried to purchase a ticket to Taiwan, but was once again denied entry onto the plane. As a result, he chose to remain in the transit area of Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila, hoping to eventually make it back to Australia.
Unfortunately for him, on November 11th, he was officially denied entry into the Philippines and was finally flown back to Australia. Upon his arrival at Melbourne airport, he was immediately arrested by local police. The NSW Raptor Squad then took custody of the man and transported him to Albury, where he faced a total of 55 charges related to drug and gun possession. These charges stemmed from a search warrant that had been executed in Kensington, Sydney, in December 2022, where guns and ammunition were seized.
The man appeared in court in Sydney yesterday, where he was denied bail and is set to appear in court once again tomorrow.
