In a recent development in Lucknow, the Uttar Pradesh Police have arrested a young voter for his involvement in a viral video that has been making rounds on social media. The video captured the voter casting multiple votes in favor of a BJP candidate at a polling booth, causing quite a stir among opposition parties.
The accused, identified as Rajan Singh, was taken into custody late Sunday after the video surfaced and was shared by several leaders from Congress and Samajwadi Party on X. The video, which lasts for about two minutes, clearly shows the voter pressing the button for BJP candidate Mukesh Rajput on the Electronic Voting Machine not once, not twice, but eight times.
Mukesh Rajput is a BJP candidate from the Farrukhabad Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh. As soon as this incident came to light, an FIR was filed at the Naya Gaon police station based on a complaint by the Assistant Returning Officer, Prateet Tripathi. The complaint was filed under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and other relevant laws, including IPC Section 171F, IPC Section 419, Sections 128, 132, and 136 of the Representation of the People's Act, and others.
The Election Commission also took note of this matter and has directed the concerned authorities to take prompt and effective action. "We have taken cognisance of the circulating video and have directed the District Election Officer to take necessary action," said Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer Navdeep Rinwa.
In addition to this, the poll panel has also instructed authorities to suspend and initiate disciplinary proceedings against all officials who were present at the polling booth during the incident. The crackdown came shortly after Congress and Samajwadi Party shared the video on X and demanded action from the Election Commission.
Expressing their concerns, Congress wrote on X, "Dear Election Commission, do you see this? One person is voting eight times. It is time to wake up." Similarly, Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav also shared the video and urged the EC to take appropriate action. It is a matter of utmost importance to ensure a free and fair election, and the authorities are taking all necessary steps to uphold the sanctity of the democratic process.
