A man has been imprisoned for stabbing a pregnant woman on a public road.
Last December 5th, in Aberfan, South Wales, a man by the name of Daniel Mihai Popescu committed a heinous act. He attacked Andreea Pintili, a 29-year-old woman who was 37 weeks pregnant at the time. The attack was described by the police as "targeted" and resulted in Andreea being hospitalized. The nearby schools were put on lockdown as a precaution.

Popescu, who is 29 years old and has no fixed address, was sentenced to 17 years and four months in prison for attempted murder. He pleaded guilty to the charge and also admitted to stalking Andreea between October 25 and December 6 of last year. This was not his only crime, as he had also been charged with intimidating a witness, to which he had pleaded not guilty.

During the trial at Merthyr Tydfil crown court, it was revealed that Popescu had been in a relationship with Andreea since September 2020. However, they had split up in August 2023 due to Popescu's gambling habit. Despite the breakup, Popescu became obsessed with Andreea and began leaving his belongings outside her home and knocking on her windows. He was arrested and bailed with a condition not to contact her, but he found out where she had moved to.

On that fateful day in December, Popescu went to Andreea's new home carrying a knife with a seven- to eight-inch blade. He told her that he was going to kill her and proceeded to stab her multiple times. Fortunately, a woman walking her dog nearby heard the commotion and ran to help. This caused Popescu to flee the scene.

Andreea sustained three superficial injuries to her thumb and two penetrating wounds to her back. She was lucky enough to escape with her life and her baby's health was deemed normal after scans were done. In a statement read to the court, Andreea expressed her gratitude for being alive after such a traumatic experience. She also stated that she firmly believed that Popescu intended to kill her and her unborn child.

Popescu's defense lawyer, David Aubrey KC, stated that his client had shown genuine remorse and regret for his actions. He also mentioned that Popescu had entered a guilty plea and had stopped the attack. However, during sentencing, Judge Lloyd-Clarke stated that he believed Popescu felt very little true remorse. He also deemed the aggravating factors of the crime to outweigh the mitigating factors.

As a result, Popescu has been banned from contacting Andreea or any of her children and is not allowed to enter Merthyr Tydfil.
