A man from Chicago Heights, named Donnail Hannah, has been ordered to stay in custody and is facing several felony charges after allegedly kidnapping two people and holding one for ransom. The incident took place on Wednesday, and Hannah was arrested in the parking lot of Wind Creek Chicago Southland casino in East Hazel Crest by the Cook County sheriff's police.
According to a news release from the police, they received a call from someone claiming that their family member had been kidnapped, and the kidnapper was demanding a ransom. The kidnapper, later identified as Hannah, had threatened to harm the male victim if the family did not pay the money. The police investigated the matter and found out that Hannah had asked the man for a ride. However, once inside the car, Hannah pulled out a gun and forced the man to reactivate a ride-sharing app.
The victim, who worked as an Uber driver, was not picking up any customers at the time of the incident. Hannah happened to come across him at a gas station in Harvey around 2 am. The victim was then forced to pick up a woman in Lansing who had requested a ride through the ride-sharing app. As she got into the back seat, she saw Hannah pointing a gun at her. The police stated that Hannah fired two shots out of the passenger window of the car at some point between Harvey and Lansing.
Hannah then instructed the victim to drive to a gas station in Ford Heights to pick up the ransom money. When they arrived, Hannah ordered the woman to get out of the car and retrieve the money. However, she managed to escape and called the police. At this point, Hannah took control of the car and drove towards the casino. The police tracked them down and found them in the casino parking lot later that day. Both Hannah and the victim were taken into custody.
According to the police, Hannah had fired another shot into the rear passenger seat at some point between Ford Heights and East Hazel Crest. This action disabled the car's fuel system, causing it to stall. Hannah then got out of the car and threw an object, which turned out to be a gun, into some nearby bushes. He was charged with two counts of aggravated kidnapping with a firearm and one count of vehicular hijacking with a firearm.
Hannah had an initial court appearance on Friday at the Markham courthouse, where he was ordered to remain in custody. His next court date is scheduled for January 9th.
