On Thursday, a tragic incident occurred in Keonjhar as an adult female elephant passed away due to various complications. It was reported that the elephant had given birth to a stillborn calf in a forest near Renda Sahi locality of Dubuna village. This unfortunate incident took place in the Bamebari section of Champua range in the district. The news of the elephant's death has raised concerns among environmentalists and wildlife enthusiasts. They have expressed their sorrow over the loss of yet another elephant in the Keonjhar forest division. In the past three years, a total of two dozen elephants have died in this division, which is a matter of great concern.
According to officials from the Forest Department, the female elephant suffered from acute labour pain and other complications. It was reported that the calf was stuck inside the elephant's body, causing her immense pain. The officials stated that the elephant started experiencing pain around 11 pm on Wednesday night. Despite efforts, the tusker was unable to give birth to the calf until 9 am on Thursday morning. Sadly, the calf was delivered stillborn, and the elephant's condition continued to deteriorate rapidly. Despite receiving treatment, the elephant was unable to stand up and ultimately passed away at around 12 pm noon. The divisional forest officer of Keonjhar division, Dhanraj HD, shared that the exact details of the complications can only be known after the post-mortem report is released. Both the mother elephant and her stillborn calf were buried in the forest later that day.
Sources revealed that measures have been taken to protect the elephants in the Keonjhar forest division. However, despite these efforts, the number of elephant deaths has continued to rise. Elephant squads and 'Gaja Sathis' have been deployed to track and monitor the movements of wild elephants and ensure their well-being. Unfortunately, they were not able to track this particular tusker in time. This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation and protection of these majestic animals.
