A huge 165kg tuna was caught near Victoria's coast.
It was a moment of pure triumph for a group of fishermen from Geelong as they proudly showed off their latest catch - a massive southern bluefin tuna weighing a whopping 165 kilograms. Steve Nelson, Bobby Griffiths, and Reece Holwell, also known as the "Chum Norris" to their close friends, were the lucky ones who managed to reel in this monster tuna after nearly two hours of intense fighting off the coast of Portland on Tuesday evening.

According to Griffiths, it was a special day for Steve as it was his first time fighting a tuna. "He's never experienced anything like this before," Griffiths shared with 9news.com.au. "And to think that he was the one who caught it, it's just unbelievable!" The trio had set off from Geelong at 2:30 am and drove down the coast to Portland to try their luck. Little did they know that their patience would pay off in the most incredible way.

After a whole day of no bites, the fishermen were about to call it a day when they suddenly felt a strong tug on their line at around 3:30 pm. "We knew it was going to be a big one," Griffiths recalled. And boy, was he right! The trio was in for a long and grueling battle with the fish, which they eventually managed to bring up after an hour and 45 minutes. "It was an emotional rollercoaster," Griffiths said, "but we were determined to not let this one get away."

Once the fish was safely back on shore, the fishermen called up the local fishing shop, Compleat Angler Portland, to come and weigh their prized catch. To their amazement, the tuna weighed an impressive 165kg, with Griffiths estimating its length at a staggering 210cm. But the real reward for their hard work came when they brought the fish home and shared its delicious meat with their friends and colleagues. "It's moments like these that make all the hard work and patience worth it," Griffiths shared with a smile.

Griffiths also revealed that the day started on a positive note when he and his mates saw a shooting star while setting off in the early hours of the morning. "We took it as a good omen for the day ahead," he said. And it certainly turned out to be an unforgettable day for the trio as they joined the ranks of the lucky few who have managed to catch a southern bluefin tuna of this size in Australia.
