During a recent interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live, veteran actor Josh Brolin opened up about his wild LSD trip as a teenager. At the young age of 13, Brolin found himself having a deep conversation with a fireplace while under the influence of the hallucinogenic drug. The 56-year-old actor, known for his roles in popular films like The Goonies and Avengers, reflected on his younger years and how he ended up taking LSD at such a young age.
When questioned by the host on how he got his hands on the drug, Brolin jokingly responded, "I don't know how it happens, man. You have parents, where are the parents? Did they give it to me, did they misplace a sugar cube, I don't know." He went on to explain that he was with his friends from Santa Barbara, who started experimenting with LSD at a young age. This eventually led to them forming a band called "Rich Kids on LSD."
Despite the potential risks of taking drugs at such a young age, Brolin described his experience as "amazing." He shared, "Your brain is still developing at 13 years old, so it's probably not the best time to start that drug, but I had a great trip." He even mentioned having a conversation with the fireplace that left a lasting impression on him. "I liked what he said. It was like caressing, it was wisdom," Brolin recalled.
However, as with most drugs, the high didn't last forever and Brolin found himself wanting to repeat the experience. "Somebody that night said we should do it again. Because, like a drunk, when you do alcohol you go, 'Let's go to the bar and let's do it again,' the next night, and the next night and the next," he shared. Unfortunately, this second trip did not go as well as the first one, leaving Brolin with a bad experience.
When asked if he would advise his 13-year-old self against taking LSD, Brolin responded, "You can't put me in that position. Because it's like every 13-year-old watching your show – because it's your biggest demographic – do not do LSD. Do not do LSD, children." He added, "It was the greatest thing I ever did."
While Brolin may have had a wild teenage years, he struggled with sobriety and alcohol issues as he got older. It wasn't until he visited his grandmother on her deathbed in the hospital that he decided to get completely sober in 2013. He shared, "Everybody knew when I walked into the room, picked her head up and looked at me and smiled and that was it. I was done." Brolin was inspired by his grandmother's strength and decided to turn his life around.
Reflecting on his journey to sobriety, Brolin shared, "I feel like something's been cultivated in me that I helped cultivate that, that my life now is better than my greatest romance of any drink I could have." He added, "I actually like my life. Not that I didn't before, because I loved it before, except when I would write indecipherable texts. That – I didn't like that."
Despite the ups and downs, Brolin has come a long way from his wild teenage years and has found peace and happiness in his sober life. And for anyone struggling with addiction, he has a simple message – "Don't do drugs, kids. It's not worth it."
