Over the past two years, a special center in Rourkela has been providing much-needed assistance to attendants of patients from Sundargarh district who are referred to the Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research. This center, known as the Patient Facilitation Centre and Attendant Accommodation Centre, not only offers a place to stay for these attendants, but also various support services to help them through the long treatment process. The center, located within the Red Cross Building of VIMSAR, was established by the District Mineral Foundation of Sundargarh and is currently being managed by a NGO called IMTS.

Initially, the center started its operations in a rented premise in Majhipalli of Sambalpur in June 2022, but later shifted to the Red Cross Building. The main purpose of this center is to provide support to patients and their attendants during their stay while receiving treatment at VIMSAR. This includes accommodation for 10 days upon admission, as well as meals and recreational activities. Additionally, the center works closely with various medical institutions to ensure that patients receive proper treatment, diagnosis, blood requirements, and medication. A team of 10 professionals, including cooks, pharmacists, an accountant, support staff, security guards, and a project coordinator, manage the facility. It has a total of 12 beds and is equipped with a kitchen, toilets, and other necessary amenities. So far, more than 1,270 patients and their attendants have benefitted from this facility, according to an official.

One of the beneficiaries of this center is Rukmini Barik from Rourkela, Jhirpani. She came to VIMSAR to attend a sick relative and was able to avail the services of the center. "Previously, we used to stay in hotels and pay around `300-400 per day. However, we were fortunate enough to meet the project coordinator of this center who shifted us here," Rukmini shared. She also added that the service at the center was excellent and it significantly reduced their expenses. Thanks to this center, many attendants like Rukmini no longer have to worry about finding affordable accommodation and can focus on taking care of their loved ones.
