A dam in Kesinga will help 3,000 farmers.
According to the locals, the construction of a check dam on the Tel river in Sukunabhata village, located in the Kasrupada panchayat of Kalahandi district, is set to bring relief to over 3,000 farmers in the area. The check dam will serve as a source of irrigation for their farmlands and also prevent floodwaters from entering during the monsoon season in nearby villages such as Sukunabhata, Kasrupada, Binekela, and Kinerkela.

Previously, the farmlands were frequently submerged in floodwaters, causing a great deal of damage. The accumulation of sand and silt on the land was a major issue for the farmers, resulting in regular losses in their paddy cultivation. In order to address this problem, the farmers had been requesting the construction of a check dam and had even submitted a memorandum to the authorities to bring attention to their plight.

Their efforts were not in vain as the state government finally took action and directed the Irrigation department to work out the details and float a tender for the project. After the tender was issued, an engineering firm was awarded the contract to construct a one-kilometre-long check dam on the Tel River. The construction has been progressing steadily, with one side of the check dam already completed with stone packing, while the other side is currently being planted with grass.

When approached for comment, engineer Prakash Kumar Behera stated that the construction work has been slowed down by the recent rains, but will resume at full speed once the monsoon season is over. He also added that upon its completion, the check dam will effectively prevent submergence and the deposition of sand and silt on the farmlands during floods and heavy rainfall. This will greatly benefit the farmers in the area and ensure the success of their crops.
