Sexual exploitation has been uncovered on tea farms in return for work

Women on British-owned tea farms that supply PG Tips and Liptons have been pressured into sex in return for work, an undercover investigation has found.

In one video, a recruitment manager for Scottish firm James Finlay & Co corners a woman in a hotel room and demands sex, during a supposed job interview.

John Chebochok – who has worked on Finlays’ plantations for more than 30 years – tells her: ‘We’ll lie down, finish and go. Then you come and work.’

Finlays is the second biggest tea firm in Kenya’s Rift Valley, and supplies Sainsbury’s and Tesco.

Separate video reveals two managers sexually harassing the same investigator at a tea farm then owned by British Dutch company Unilever. On an induction day, a manager gave a talk on Unilever’s zero-tolerance sexual harassment policy – then invited her to a hotel bar that night and pressured her for sex.

During a gruelling job weeding on the farm, a supervisor offered her lighter duties in return for sex. Unilever said it was ‘shocked and saddened’, adding employees who breached its conduct codes had been fired and police informed.
