Patrice Chappelle, wife and mother of one, was laid off from her IT Federal Contractor job, but instead of letting this challenging situation bring her down, she turned it into a new opportunity. Along with her 12-year-old son Bron and her husband Don, Patrice launched MelanBrand Skin, a Black-owned skincare line for kids in May 2023.
The goal of MelanBrand Skin is to provide natural and safe products for melanated skin. Patrice explained, "Our products contain antioxidants, hydrates, and balances skin, soothes skin irritation, can reduce skin redness, and may be used by just about any/most skin types. We also have products for eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis. The products are also gluten free, paraben free, formaldehyde free, phthalate free, and cruelty free. Our packaging is BPA free and made in the USA."
When Bron turned eleven, Patrice realized it was time to introduce him to a more specialized skincare regimen. The lotion she used on him never worked very well for moisturizing his face, and the soap would dry out his skin. Patrice wanted to create a skincare line that was both effective and affordable, and so she and her husband Don got to work on making that dream a reality. Don is now the COO of MelanBrand Skin.
"Our mission is to empower parents to take care of their children’s skin in a natural and safe way," Patrice said. "We believe that every child deserves to have healthy and nourished skin, and that’s what we aim to provide with our products. We also want to empower Black and brown kids to feel confident in their skin. When we discuss hygiene with our kids, we never emphasize proper skin care for a daily and nightly routine. Now, there is a line for kids with melanated skin."
