Justice Secretary Alex Chalk has revealed that around 40 prisoners from HMP Wandsworth have been moved out of the prison following the escape of Daniel Khalife. In a statement to Sky's Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips, Mr Chalk said that the preliminary findings of his investigation into the London jail have found that the relevant procedures and security staff were in place.
However, out of an abundance of caution, these prisoners have been relocated to different sites. Mr Chalk also said that additional resources have been allocated to Wandsworth, including a former governor with expertise in security. He went on to explain that the investigation is looking into whether protocol was followed during the unloading of food from a van and searching of the delivery vehicle.
Khalife, 21, remains in police custody after being arrested in the Northolt suburb of north-west London four days after his escape. Mr Chalk confirmed that protocols were in place, but the investigation is yet to establish whether they were followed. He said he will be announcing the terms of reference of the separate independent investigation next week, in order to make sure the conclusions are 'rock solid'.
