Realizing what she wanted, Denise Francis cleared a space to attain it. The 27-year-old college graduate set aside money after graduation to make her New York City loft dream a reality. “At the age of 27, I was finally able to move into that dream apartment,” Francis said, which was a one-bedroom costing her $1,850 a month in rent. Despite Yonkers in Westchester County not being her preferred location, she was content with what she got within her budget. “Once I got the keys and I opened up the doors, I started doing two things: screaming and crying,” Francis said. “I was just so excited because finally I feel like I reached that milestone in adulthood where I finally have my own space to curate for me, by me to live my best life.”
Francis' intention was to move out of her family home by 21, however this didn't happen due to various reasons. Hence, she used the time to keep saving. This was hard for Francis since she had part-time jobs and was helping her mum with rent and other bills. Once she acquired a salaried job and a promotion, she was able to save $20,000 by 2020, which was sufficient to cover a year's worth of rent. “Once I reached that goal number of $20,000, I knew that I was more than ready to be financially stable to move into my first-ever dream apartment,” she said.
Data for 2023 reveals that the median rent for apartments in Yonkers is between $2,280 and $3,115. Francis is a busy bee as she is the arts and culture director for a Brooklyn nonprofit, content creator for her LiveNaturallyLove brand,
