Two men have found themselves in the custody of DuPage County jail due to separate incidents involving the possession of guns. The arrests were made by the Naperville Police Department. One man was in possession of a machine gun, while the other had discharged a weapon.
The first case occurred when a police officer pulled over a vehicle that had just left a Wendy's parking lot. The officer noticed that the car was in close proximity to their own vehicle, prompting them to make the stop at around 8:10 a.m. on Thursday. According to a news release from both the police department and the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office, the officer initially spoke to the driver about their expired license plate. However, things took a concerning turn when the officer heard what sounded like the slide of a handgun being racked from inside the vehicle. This prompted the officer to call for backup.
When additional officers arrived, they spoke to the passenger, identified as 19-year-old Tony Thompson. Upon searching the vehicle, they discovered a Glock 17 9-mm firearm with a switch capable of making it fully automatic, hidden beneath Thompson's seat. He was subsequently charged with possession of a machine gun, possession of a firearm without a FOID, and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
The second incident occurred later that same day at around 8:05 p.m. Officers were driving behind a Naperville resident, 24-year-old Trensae Ware, when they noticed that he was not wearing a seat belt. They also reported hearing a gunshot and saw the vehicle swerve and shake. This prompted them to pull Ware over. Upon searching the vehicle, they found cannabis shake and an open bottle of tequila.
All four occupants of the vehicle were asked to exit, and a spent casing was found on the driver's seat. Upon further inspection, a loaded .45-caliber firearm was found below the front passenger seat, and a bullet hole was discovered near where the driver's left foot would have been. Authorities were able to match the bullets in the gun to the spent shell casing and a shot bullet found in the car.
Ware was charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and reckless discharge of a firearm. According to the report, only Ware's hands tested positive for gunshot residue. A 9-mm handgun was found in the rear passenger compartment of the vehicle, but it did not match the discharged shell casing.
State's Attorney Robert Berlin commended the Naperville police for their swift actions in a statement regarding both arrests. He praised their commitment to public safety and their efforts in removing dangerous weapons from those who are not legally allowed to possess them. Both suspects are scheduled to appear in court on July 1 for their arraignment hearings.
