In Sambalpur, a tragic incident occurred where two final-year MBBS students from Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Burla lost their lives at Deojharan waterfall. The students, Monica Meena and Sandeep Puri, were swept away by a sudden flash flood in the stream on Saturday. Both students hailed from different parts of the country, Monica from Rajasthan and Sandeep from New Delhi.
According to the inspector-in-charge of Jujomura Police Station, Sanjay Rout, a group of six students had gone for a day trip to the popular waterfall. However, their joyous outing took a devastating turn when a sudden downpour on the hilltop caused a flash flood in the stream. Unfortunately, Monica and Sandeep were swept away in the strong current, leaving their friends and other tourists in a state of shock.
As soon as the other students and tourists realized what had happened, they immediately alerted the fire service and police personnel who were stationed nearby. Rescue teams were quickly deployed to the scene and, after a diligent search, the bodies of the two students were recovered. It was a heartbreaking moment for everyone involved.
The police have registered a case of unnatural death and an investigation is currently underway. The officer also mentioned that a team from the institute has visited the waterfall site to gather more information. This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the power of nature and the need for caution, especially during monsoon season.
